Beach Photography: Embracing Sun, Sand, and Sea
Ley everyone! As someone who spends a lot of time photographing on the beach, I thought I’d share some insights and tips. Beach photography is one of my passions—there’s something about the combination of natural light, open spaces, and the soothing backdrop of the ocean that makes for incredible photos.
First off, lighting is everything. The sun can be your best friend or your worst enemy. Midday sun tends to be harsh and can cast unflattering shadows. I prefer shooting during the golden hours—shortly after sunrise or before sunset—when the light is soft and warm. It adds a magical quality to the photos.
Dealing with the elements is another fun challenge. Wind can make for some dynamic shots with hair and clothing adding movement to the image. But it can also be a nuisance. I always advise clients to consider the wind when choosing hairstyles or outfits. And speaking of outfits, neutral and pastel colors tend to work beautifully against the beach backdrop.
One thing I always keep an eye on is tide schedules. The last thing we want is to set up the perfect shot only to have a wave sneak up on us (although sometimes those candid reactions make for great photos!). Knowing the tide times helps in planning where and when to shoot.
Let’s not forget about protecting your gear. Sand and saltwater can be brutal on cameras. I make sure to bring along protective coverings and always have cleaning supplies on hand. A little preparation goes a long way in keeping everything functioning smoothly.
Lastly, I encourage everyone to have fun with it. The beach is a place of relaxation and joy, and that should come through in the photos. Whether it’s a family playing in the surf or a couple taking a romantic stroll, the best shots are the ones where people are genuinely enjoying themselves.
Thanks for letting me share a bit about what I love. If you have any beach photography experiences or tips of your own, I’d love to hear them!
